Is pantyhose to be worn with cocktail dress and open-toe sandals?

open toe sandals
Kaytee asked:

I haven’t attended many upscale events and I’ve been wondering: if I wear an evening dress and open toe shoes, can I wear pantyhose? Or should it be bare foot? I feel all the pantyhose etiquette is really confusing, ’cause I’ve read and seen lots of contradicting stuff.
I mean, yeah, not only pantyhose but for instance garter belt and stockings – is that ok?

panti-hose are acceptable, but i would suggest in favour of stockings and a garter belt…very elegant, very sexy, with none of the “slut factor” that some people seem to associate with them

not w/ open toe shoes. if u can afford it go get a pedicrue. or do it urself at home. and put on lotion all the time until the event to make ur feel look healthy and happy. same w/ any leg you are showing

eww. I **** it when people wear pantyhose and open toed shoes. dont wear the pantyhose or change your shoes, don’t wear then together. better yet, just don’t wear the pantyhose at all.

i am always in favore of wearing hose, but with a cocktail dress and your shoes i would have to say no. try changing your shose and go with a garter belt…what color is the dress? and the hose??

if its a short cocktail dress, you might do better with tights. otherwise, go with pantyhose that dont make you look to grandma like (i.e. tan/nude, etc). many designers are pairing tights/leggings/colored pantyhose with short/midlength dresses, but if its full-length, youd best leave it alone.

i remember oprah saying that she likes to wear pantyhose, and if she has open toe shoes, she’ll just cut the tips of the hose off where her toes show through in the shoes, so it kinda looks like she’s not wearing any.

Closed toe shoes would be the best but if you are not trying to impress anyone, you could wear open toed shoe with pantyhose just not with a reinforced toe. Hanes makes a toeless pantyhose or like above you could carefully cut the toes off but watch out for runs. I would try that before the events to be sure it works. Just be comfortable in what you do.

Ricky is right about Oprah. Do not wear panthose w/ open toed shoes that is why Oprah wears spanx, me too they also hold everything like a garter belt i’m actually wearing the legging style right now w/ a mini. check out her website to find a store near you. watch the video to its great how she invented them good story, have a wonderfull time at the ball.

As long as you get the sheer toe and heel stockings they will be perfect. You will find that stockings that need a garter belt are almost always more sheer and **** than any pantyhose or thi highs you can find. That’s because they don’t need all that heavy Lycra in them to hold them up, the garter belt does that. I wear them to work all the time, and they are very classic looking, plus extremely **** if you let anyone see the tops.

Bare feet with a cocktail dress looks slovenly, like you should be working a street corner somewhere.

Yes, wear the pantyhose with the cocktail dress and open-toe sandals. Make sure the hose are sandalfoot toe and very sheer. Nude, tan, black, and off-black are very elegant for evening colors for nylons.

yes you can wear pantyhose with open toed shoes
    – put the toe part of the pantyhose under your foot

hide the toe-suport part of the pantyhose
women should wear pantyhose all the time

I have to say that these self-imposed pantyhose rules strike me as ludicrous. I gather it is important to some women to appear attractive to men. Of course I recognize this doesn’t apply to all women, but if this applies to you, then wear pantyhose. Always. Wear them with your skirts, your dresses (cocktail or not), with pants, with boots, with pumps, with open and closed toe shoes. Just wear them. I know I speak for many men when I say that the magic thing about pantyhose is that they only improve your appearance. And ditch the trailer-trash look (i.e. bare legs). I chuckle when I see some women, in particular, the 35 and older crowd, going out with bare legs, even in colder climates. Aside from appearing like they forgot to finish getting dressed, their legs rarely hold up to the spectacle. Nylons put a very special look on the legs, unrivaled by any cream or sprayons, and this has a very special effect on many men – including me. Think of nylons like a makeup for your legs. If you have to put on makeup for your event, then chances are you should put on nylons as well. With respect to open toe shoes. Seeing your toes through nylons is HOT. Seeing your toes bare is NOT!

It boggles my mind that women fret over a nylon seam over their toes. Wolford, Falke, Cecelia de Rafael, many European brands have invisible toes on their hosiery. Checkout shapings Dot Com.
Men love the sight of women’s legs in silky looking hose. Hosed legs are far sexier than bare legs. Fine, young ladies today prefer, and it’s been spreading to older ladies too, to go bare leg..but let me tell you.. THAT is NOT A GOOD LOOK. Bare legs in a cocktail dress looks so unfinished. You’d think after spending all that time on nails, makeup for the face, clothes for the body, that one would spend wisely on an upscale, properly fitting/non constricting non-control top/ pair of hose to cosmetically enhance the lower half of the body? Do your own test. Go with and without upscale hose for an evening out with your girls and tell us what gets more attention from men? It will be obvious, even to hose haters.

One more thing. How about not worrying so much about what the so-called style is that day? I can say that most men are not looking to see if that was last years dress or today’s dress code. We look at the overall package..and if it looks good, that’s great. I know women are far more critical of other women in that regard. If you have a great face, don’t hide it with your hair or overdo the makeup. If you have a great body, don’t hide it in a potato sack. If you have great legs show them off. Conversely, if you have a bad complexion, a little makeup will certain be in order. If your body has a few extra pounds, don’t try and squeeze it into a skintight outfit, and if you have pale, mottle, bruised legs, or veins (most women)… properly fitting pantyhose (so you don’t complain of it being constricting) will be a great cosmetic for them. Oddly enough, my wife’s bruises show up more with the dark/black hose than with the semi-opaque, nude, tan, shades.

I’m a straight man, and I think women look very nice in hose. Sheer or tights. Pantyhose are something that differentiates the look of a woman from a man. Stockings are even sexier. Vive les difference!
